12,500 kJ test: The strongest rockfall barrier in the world

Geobrugg has set a new benchmark in rockfall protection: The RXE-12500 barrier withstood a 25-tonne concrete block impacting at 115 km/h and absorbed a record energy of over 12,500 kilojoules. This world first offers new possibilities in rockfall protection.

Geobrugg has successfully tested its latest rockfall barrier and achieved unprecedented results. During one of the tests, a 25-tonne block of concrete was released from a height of 52 metres. On impact with the barrier, the block reached an impact speed of 115 kilometres per hour. The ring net barrier withstood an impact energy of 12,500 kilojoules and absorbed an energy of 14,100 kilojoules.

This test surpassed the previous record set in October 2017, when the company successfully tested an impact energy of 10,000 kilojoules. Geobrugg’s technological advances emphasise the company’s commitment to improving protection solutions in the field of natural hazards.
