CALPEX Sets New Thermal Insulation Record

Whenever pipe systems are used to transport media at a controlled temperature, the top priority is to minimize thermal energy losses. The smaller the thermal energy losses, the lower the operating costs over the system lifetime. Within the context of district and local heating, well insulated pipelines make the heat grid more energy-efficient, thereby reducing heating costs. Brugg Rohrsystem AG sees itself as a leader in the area of energy efficiency technology for thermally insulated flexible plastic pipes. The crucial factor here is the thermal conductivity of the thermal insulation. This value is known as the λ50 value and has been specified as 0.0216 W/m*K for CALPEX pipes since 2010. Until recently, getting significantly below this “magical” limit in an industrial production process was regarded as virtually impossible. However, after many years of development work, there has now been a technical breakthrough. The λ50 value for the insulating material used in the new PUR-KING pipes stands at a mere 0.0199 W/m*K. This kind of reduction to below 0.020 W/m*K represents a major milestone in the development of insulating materials. This technical success was achieved by consistently optimizing all the parameters involved in the production process. The adjusted formulations were tested continuously and matched to the new system components. This has resulted in a stable production process that allows the new PUR-KING pipes to be produced with a consistently high standard of quality and in sufficient quantities. In accordance with the motto “once is never enough”, a large number of PUR-KING pipes were examined by an accredited institute. The stated thermal conductivity of 0.0199 W/m*K is the average of several measurements taken at a temperature of 50°C, as stipulated by the relevant standards for district heating applications. The examinations by the institute also proved the stability of the newly developed production process. The improved insulating properties of the new PUR-KING pipes ensure lower thermal energy losses, e.g., when operating a district heating grid. Naturally, the PUR-KING pipes also reflect the current state of the art when it comes to every other aspect of environmental friendliness as well. With its PUR-KING product, Brugg Rohrsystem AG has set yet another milestone in the ongoing development of its CALPEX pipe systems – proving once again that there is always room for improvement no matter how good something already is. With CALPEX, engineers, building contractors, and installers can count on a solution that is impressive in every respect. In terms of energy efficiency, flexibility, durability, and ease of installation, this product is leading the way. The CALPEX versions with PUR-KING insulation are being launched on the market in two stages. The CALPEX UNO and CALPEX DUO heating ranges with dimensions of up to 142 mm will be available from April 2018. The larger sizes are due to follow in the fall of 2018.
