Uerikon Membrane Filtration and Sewage Treatment Plant.

The Uerikon sewage treatment plant is the first communal sewage treatment of its size – approx. 7,000 population equivalent – in Switzerland to be fitted with membrane filtration technology. The project was therefore a significant one in terms of research and was accompanied by EAWAG (the Federal Institute for Water Supply, Wastewater Treatment and Water Pollution Control). Membrane filtration technology enables massive increases in treatment performance to be achieved compared with conventional sand filters. This means that even bacteria and viruses can be blocked.

This new technology is used primarily for sensitive bodies of water, such as Lake Zurich, which is used both for drinking water and as a bathing location. A further advantage is the fact that less space is required than for existing procedures. These two arguments both operate in favour of introducing membrane filtration technology at the Uerikon sewage treatment plant, since the plant is located in a heavily populated area and Lake Zurich serves as receiving water.

Rittmeyer automation technology

The processes of a sewage treatment plant, and particularly those of a membrane filtration plant, are complex and time-consuming. Directing, controlling and monitoring these procedures requires the latest in automation technology. Rittmeyer was the subcontractor responsible for supplying the process control system, the control system and the switch gear and control gear. The installation was able to be handed over to the plant within a short time.

The achievement of this demanding project means that the project team has made an active contribution towards future-orientated water pollution control using state-of-the-art technology.
