This exclusive listed neighborhood around the Grand Hotel in Heiligendamm, with the "Villa Perle" (formerly the summer residence of Tsar Nicolas I), has been privately owned since 1996 and is to be supplied with district heating after all renovation work has been completed. As the existing district heating network cannot be supplied with the capacities required for this, Stadtwerke Rostock AG decided to extend the network, investing EUR 1.1 million. Due to the local circumstances, increasing the dimensions by replacing the existing pipelines with larger plastic sheath pipelines was out of the question. Time was a major factor in the decision to lay around 2 kilometers of FLEXWELL district heating cable. The fact that the project had to be implemented on or right next to hotel sites/properties which were open to the public and the exceptionally high demands with regard to the construction times, deadlines, procedures, and adherence to schedules tipped the scales in our favor. The initial construction phase – a 200 m pipeline including all civil engineering and surface restoration work – had to be completed over a four-week period from March 6–31, 2017 before the start of the hotel season. Laying approx. 400 m of FLEXWELL 200/310 district heating cable, using hydraulic circulation drilling in part, took a mere two days. The second construction phase – with a further 600 m of 200/310 district heating cable – will take place in October, after the end of the vacation season.
