Together with their Norwegian partner, Sensors AS, Rittmeyer was able to win over the energy supplier Saudefaldene for a water-level-measuring project at the Storlivatnet reservoir in the Rogaland region in south-west Norway. Saudefaldene operates 7 hydropower stations which produce a total of approx. 1.85 TWh of energy every year.
The Storlivatnet reservoir requires a highly precise water level measurement to the exact centimeter. To enable the maximum amount of energy to be produced, the reservoir should be able to be filled to its maximum level. However, the reservoir may only be filled up to a certain maximum level to prevent too large a pressure from being exerted on the dam, which would pose a risk to dam safety.
For this purpose, Saudefaldene decided to use the RIPRESS Premium.
Along with the highly precise and drift-free measurement, the main reason for this decision was that the Rittmeyer product supports the Ethernet-based transmission protocol IEC 60870-5-104. This enables the customer to connect the device directly to the local process network without a converter and to call up different values in real time. Remote diagnosis and access to RIPRESS Premium mean that any problems can also be analyzed and solved remotely.
In November, Marcel Pilss from Rittmeyer and two Saudefaldene employees were able to install this water level measurement system and put it into operation.
The customer is extremely satisfied with the various measurements the system offers. Thanks to this successful commissioning and owing to the fact that both the IEC 104 transmission protocol as well as remote access is very popular in Norway, Rittmeyer is hoping to enjoy a resurgence in water level and flow measurements in Scandinavia.
